Deanna Frazier Years ago, I read a book with a title I've never forgotten. A Life of One's Own, written by Joanna Field, is the story of a young woman's struggle to find a place for herself in the midst of the repression and expectations of England in the 1920's.
The pressures and rules under which she lived were clear and explicit. At that time, women simply did not participate in community life. They were not supposed to have power or money or influence. Her ideas were of no interest to the men in her life, and women were frightened when she questioned the "way things are". Fortunately, we no longer live with such overt restrictions on what we can think and say, or do, or become. While there are many subtle pressures to be "normal", we are quite free to create and live, "A Life of One's Own."
Today, the bigger question is, "Why don't more people actually do it?" Far too many of us continue to be the employees, neighbors, sons and daughters, spouses, and parents we should be. We labor under the false belief that to start a business, write a book, go back to school, change careers, or even change our hobbies might horribly undermine civilization and end all human life as we know it. I hate to tell you, but I don't think you have that much power!
Now I am NOT suggesting that you abandon your family or run away from responsibilities. I am not necessarily encouraging you to do anything the neighbors will even notice!
The world's best hockey player, Wayne Gretzky, observed, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." You will fail at every event, every opportunity, and every skill you never try.
So today, ask yourself these questions:
What are the things I should try? What should I get on, fall off, and learn I'm not very good at? What are the things I might be wonderful at?
And this week take these actions:
Wear a color you've never worn before. Sing. I love the story of Paul Potts, the mobile phone salesman, who won the television reality show, Britain's Got Talent. Click here to watch his story. Take a different route to work. Visit a house of worship you've never attended before. Go to a movie you would "never" see.
Push your boundaries, expand your world, explore the possibilities. You deserve, "A Life of One's Own"!
